The Carolina Academy honored veterans on Nov. 9 during their annual Veterans Day Program. Army National Guard Major Donnie Sauls was the speaker. “I’m truly honored to speak at this occasion,” Sauls told parents, students and teachers who gathered in the school’s gymnasium for the program. During his speech, he showed some pictures of his time in Iraq on an overhead projector. Head of School, Anna Floyd, thanked Sauls for his speech. “We at The Carolina Academy express a special thank you to you and will pledge to teach our children about your sacrifices,”Floyd told veterans as her voice trembled. The Carolina Academy Singers, under the direction of Cathy Creel performed a Musical tribute to America. The Carolina Academy Teacher and FCA Sponsor, Kenneth Bowen read American Patriotism: A Collage. Bowen said sixth and seventh graders recently wrote some papers about patriotism and he took a sentence of each paper to make a collage. “I am proud to live in the best country in the world,” a sentence in the collage reads. “I do not want to take things for granted, but instead I want to consider myself an American patriot.” Other Veterans Day events appear on page 9A.
