Lake City Senior Center is excited to have three very unique individuals as part of our "family”" three of our seniors are age 90 or over! Recently each was asked to tell a little about themselves so that we could share their ageless wisdom with you. Here are our three eldest members, sharing some of their secrets to longlife:
Alberta McFadden Lewis will be 95 years old on Dec. 25. Lewis charmed us this past Christmas by wearing high heels to our holiday celebration and charms us nearly everyday with her sunny disposition. It’s nearly impossible to be in a bad mood with Ms. Alberta around!! She was born in Williamsburg County and lived in Florida for 52 years. She came back to our area in 2005. She says she has been a Christian all her life. Among her jobs, she worked on farms, did housework and worked in a factory. Her advice to others: “To everyone, my age or not my age, go to church and work for God and serve Him. Give Him thy praise in everything we do. As it says in Exodus 20:12, "Honor they father and thy mother that thy days might be long in the land that the Lord your God has given you."
John Benjamin "Benny" McCutcheon turned 94 about a month ago. Whatever day you're at the center, you’re likely to see Mr. Benny on the treadmill-he’s in our exercise room nearly everyday. He was born at the home on McCutcheon Road about three miles from Lake City. He grew up on the family farm and has lived within a mile or two of where he was born for 94 years. Highlights of his life include (not necessarily in this order) the marriage to his wife who was his best friend, the birth of three healthy children, serving on County Council for Florence County for 22 years and as Chairman for 14 years, and going from plowing with an ox to plowing with a tractor! His advice: “Read your Bible daily and turn you life over to Jesus. Ask Him to come into your life and be your savior. Put God first in your life, others second and yourself last.”
Harry George Wagner turned 90 in October. He and his wife, Elizabeth (Libby))are a treat to know and are at the center several days a week. You should have seen what a stunning couple they made the past spring, with Harry in a tuxedo and Libby in a sequined gown! Harry was born and raised in the Dayton, Ohio area. He owned an American Motors dealership for 30 years and met Libby in Ohio. When they decided to move to Lake City ( this is Libby’s hometown) they had thought they’d be going back to Ohio quite a bit to see their four children and their families, but three of those children moved to South Carolina, too! Harry’s advice: “Be part of a church family. We’ve been part of High Hill Freewill Baptist Church and still try to attend regularly. Lake City is a wonderful home-we love the South and we love you all! And the best advice is to love one another.”
