Police presence up after 3 tractor-trailers shot on SC interstate
ST. MATTHEWS, S.C. (AP) _ State and local police increased patrols Wednesday on Interstate 26 in Calhoun County, a day after three tractor-trailers were shot.
Bullets shattered the windshields of two tractor-trailers Tuesday evening, causing the drivers' minor injuries from the broken glass, Sheriff Thomas Summers said. A third 18-wheeler was hit in the door.
The shootings appeared to be isolated and random, Summers said Tuesday.
The sheriff did not immediately return telephone messages Wednesday.
The shots appeared to have been fired from an overpass on the highway about 20 miles southeast of Columbia.
"We're riding through that area more than normal," state Highway Patrol spokesman Sid Gaulden said Wednesday.
