In S.C., McCain says we are winning in Iraq

BEAUFORT (AP) _ Republican White House hopeful John McCain told supporters Monday that the U.S. is winning the war in Iraq and vowed to always back the men and women who have served in the armed forces.

"Our best days are ahead of us," the Arizona senator told a crowd of about 200 packed into a restaurant just off a Veterans Day parade route in this early voting stare.

McCain, a former prisoner of war in Vietnam, said he will look veterans in the eye and say, "I will never let you down."

He also called on the crowd to continue supporting Iraq War efforts. "We are winning in Iraq," McCain said.

McCain walked most of the nearly two-mile parade in front of a Jeep that carried his 95-year-old mother. He zigged and zagged along the parade route, shaking hands with people along the street in this coastal community.

"I think the people expect that" McCain said. Besides, he said it's good exercise.
