A. C. Matthews, 73, died on Monday, Oct. 29, 2007 at his residence after an extended illness.
A funeral was at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1 at Unity Christian Fellowship. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lois (Ray) Kennedy and Lubby (J.C.) Curry.
Born in Florence county, Mr. Matthews was a son of the late Clinton Hampton and Mildred Dozier Matthews. He was a U.S. Army veteran and worked for Pine Bay Dairy, Sealtest Dairy, and retired from Flavor Rich. Mr. Matthews coached Small Fry and Dixie Youth baseball in Coward and Sardis. His hobbies were baseball, fishing, hunting, camping, and cutting grass for the elderly and was a member of Unity Christian Fellowship and the Men’s Fellowship of the church.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Mary “Libby” Matthews; a daughter, Jackie (Wayne) Gainey of Florence; two sons, Allen (Lisa) Matthews of Florence and Stanley (Heather) Matthews of Timmonsville; a sister, Dora (Jim) Henderson of Florence; a brother, Oswald (Judy) Matthews of Hendersonville, N.C.; and five grandchildren, Drew Matthews, Justin and Lauren Gainey, Dustin and Alli Matthews.
