McMaster: Officials should have released Chem-Nuclear information

COLUMBIA (AP) _ South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster says the state's environmental agency should have publicly released records about pollution levels at a nuclear waste landfill in Barnwell County.

McMaster says the Department of Health and Environmental Control broke the state's Freedom of Information law by not reviewing documents from landfill operator Chem-Nuclear to see if the information should be released. McMaster says the state agency took the company's word that the records should be sealed.

Agency spokesman Thom Berry says the department didn't break any laws.

Tritium levels in wells beneath the site have registered above federal drinking water standards.
