It isn’t everyday a school principal rides a horse in a parade in an effort to promote academic achievement in his students.
A crowd of approximately 100 parents and other attendees gathered in front of J.C. Lynch Elementary School for its Character Parade on Oct. 31.
Students were encouraged to dress up as storybook characters in an effort to encourage them to read.
Sharon Brehm, a parent attending the event, said the children enjoyed the parade and their participation in the parade makes them want to read books more.
This year, the school adopted a Walt Disney World theme with faculty and staff dressed as Walt Disney World characters.
Principal Michael Derrick led the parade riding a horse dressed as Prince Charming.
Assistant Principal Cutina Barrineau was dressed as Little Red Riding Hood and also coordinated the character parade along with the assistance of the office staff.
Nearly 437 students were led by their teachers as Lake City High School Marching Band members followed playing tunes alerting everyone in Coward a parade was nearby.
“The band was good, everybody was wonderful,” Derrick said. “I think it went great.”
Some parents ran to their children and took pictures of them as they strolled by.
FCSD3 Senior Director of Instruction, Donna Goodwin and Senior Director of Accountability, Laura Hickson were seen at the parade waving to students and faculty as they walked by.
Following the parade, Lake City High School Marching Band performed a few musical selections for the crowd.
