Career Day Program

Johnakin Middle School in Marion had a Career Day Program in November. Tiffany Bartell welcomed everyone, followed by Daniel Fore leading the student body in the Pledge of Allegiance. Serena Foxworth, career counselor, spoke about the purpose of the program, which was because November is National Career Development Month.

Weslyn Burroughs introduced guest speakers Dr. Vincent Mendes and Poiette McGill-Bromell. Mendes discussed his career as a chiropractor and Bromell shared that she was influenced by a career day when she was a student at JMS. She is a licensed mortician and works in her family’s business. We would like to thank Mendes and Bromell for  giving their time to inspire our students to plan for their futures. Jason Bryant, principal, made closing remarks.

Pastoral Breakfast

JMS had its first Pastoral Breakfast on Nov. 29. Eleven ministers or representatives from local churches attended.

Bryant explained the purpose of the meeting, which is to begin a community-wide alliance between Johnakin and Marion’s churches. He discussed the daily personal and academic challenges that face many JMS students and encouraged these individuals to become involved with the students and their families to help meet the challenges. Michael Lupo, Marion School District 1 Superintendent and Kandace Bethea, director of curriculum and instruction, reiterated the importance of this task in relation to our community and the positive outcomes which could occur.

Bryant also invited the ministers to visit Johnakin during the day and eat lunch with the students, thus becoming a visible facet of our school.

At the close of the breakfast, he encouraged the ministers to reach out to other parishioners to join in this positive effort to help our students. The next breakfast is tentatively scheduled for the end of February.

Annual Christmas Concert

JMS had it’s annual Christmas Concert  on Dec. 6, under the direction of Steve Elham, band director, and Ronny Rogers, chorus director

The program opened with the 6th Grade Beginner Band playing Jingle Bells, My Dreydl, Jolly Old St. Nick, and Up On a Housetop. Next, the Chorus sang, The Light Come Down, Go Tell It On the Mountain, Children, Go Where I Send Thee, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and Common Ground.

The program concluded with the JMS Concert Band performing Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, March of the Toy Soldiers, Angels We Have Heard on High, and Santa’s Rockin’ Holiday Mix.

The Fine Arts Department would like to thank all who came and enjoyed this wonderful program presented by JMS students.
