Lions club busy with Christmastime activities

»  Comments | Post a Comment

JOHNSONVILLE — Once again this year the Johnsonville Lions club has had two special activities for Christmas time which it conducts routinely each year. One was based on our charitable fund raising work which we have conducted through the year to help those in need who live in our communities. The other was to have an entertaining meeting with the Christmas spirit for members to enjoy.

First the Lions Club has formally donated $1500 to be used to make donations to needy children who would not enjoy Christmas gifts without this help. Other Lions members also make personal donations to help boost the fund to cover all of those in need. The Lions Club members were surprised at how many were in need and pleased that their activities in fund raising were helping local families. Lion Bill Miles has been to Wal Mart to get the gift vouchers which will be given out as a special Christmas activity Lion Bill has done for many years.

The Christmas entertainment was provided by the ‘Sparkletones’ chorus from the Johnsonville Elementary School lead by Ms Patty Kelly. They attended a regular club meeting at Kenny’s Bar-B-Que restaurant where we now meet routinely. The ‘Sparkletones’ sang various Christmas songs and finished with one in which eight students individually sang one section. The picture shows the chorus standing in the club meeting room and singing their songs. Some of the children’s parents and family members were also there to hear the singing. It was inspiring to see that the children were all singing the songs from memory and the chorus was very good. When their performance was over they had their lunch in Kenny’s Bar-B-Que and enjoyed their selections immensely. This was given to them by the Lions Club in gratitude for their Christmas singing,

The Lions Club wishes to thank everyone who made contributions to us during our Candy Day back in October. We had club members on duty at Piggly Wiggly and IGA in Johnsonville and also at Food Lion in Hemingway. We also had support from Keystone Club members from the Boys & Girls Club and this was very much appreciated. Those of you who helped us as you shopped at those stores made a significant contribution to the funds we can use to help local people in need especially of eyesight testing and glasses or hearing aid service. We are also very grateful to those professional and business organizations who give us wonderful support every year around Candy Day and donate us essential help in dealing with those in need.

The Lions Club is very interested in making contact with anybody who would like to attend our club meetings and consider becoming club member. The basic work we do is to help serve our communities by fund raising and assisting those in need. Our club routinely meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month starting 12 noon at ‘Kenny’s Bar-B-Que.
