FLORENCE — Lionel Brown, Florence School District 1’s assistant superintendent for administrative services, discussed subdivision zoning at Forest Lake, the effect Wal-Mart construction has on West Florence High School and basketball security at a regular meeting Thursday night.
Brown said he was contacted by a local developer about zoning in the areas of Delmae Heights and Savannah Grove elementary schools.
Phase III of a new subdivision is being developed at Forest Lake and as it currently stands, 12 lots would be zoned for Delmae and 39 lots would be zoned for Savannah Grove, Brown said.
The local developer requested the board consider zoning students living in the new subdivision for Delmae.
Board member Alexis Pipkins said he doesn’t agree with the developer’s request and the community needed to be given a chance to speak on the issue.
Pipkins said if the district was to discuss rezoning, it should be discussion on district-wide rezoning and not one area.
Brown also discussed traffic concerns at West Florence High School.
A Wal-Mart Supercenter is being developed across from the school and school administrators have concerns about the safety of students entering and leaving the campus.
Superintendent Larry Jackson said traffic from the supercenter will create “a nightmare” situation for the school.
Brown said he has contacted the S.C. Department of Transportation to address the administration’s concerns about traffic at the school.
Brown also discussed security measures at basketball games. The district will continue its plan for security at both home and away games.
All information presented by Brown was for the board to review.
