HEMINGWAY - Thieves broke into Young's Convenience Store on East Broad Street in the early morning Dec. 7, cutting phone wires and disabling the alarm system. According to the incident report, an 800-pound safe was taken from the store, containing approximately $5,800 in cash. The safe itself was a time-lock type that was valued at $5,000. Damage to store fixtures, the alarm system, and the store's computer totaled about $1500. Apparently a hand truck was used to load the safe onto a truck. A crowbar was recovered at the scene.
Other Youngs stores have been hit in a similar fashion, apparently by a gang of professional criminals. The thieves operated quickly, in plain sight in the front of the store.
An investigation is ongoing. Anyone that has seen anything suspicious during that night please contact the Hemingway Police Department at 558-2424.
