Marion School District 1’s Johnakin Middle School will have a new start time and tardy bell beginning Jan. 7, 2008.
The school varied its schedule a few years ago, officials said, to accommodate additional instructional time in the school day.
According to Superintendent Michael Lupo, though, beginning Jan. 7, 2008, the middle school will change its school start time, and subsequent tardy bell, to 8:15 a.m., to coincide with Marion High School.
When JMS moved to its earlier start time to add additional instruction to the school day, all schools cooperated with the earlier start, Lupo said, but it was not without some creative rearranging of bus schedules for the elementary schools to handle the influx of early bus riders, Al Blake, director of operations at the district, said.
All other schools in Marion One will operate on their current bell schedules.
The instructional program at JMS will not suffer because of the time change, JMS will rearrange its school day to maximize instructional time ending their school day at 3:15.
This information will be disseminated over the coming weeks, via placement on the JMS marquee, in the JMS and District newsletters, on the District’s and JMS’ Web sites, in addition to local media outlets. Also, Blake said, JMS will do a direct mailing to the students’ parents.
