SPARTANBURG – Five University of South Carolina Upstate freshmen students are recent recipients of $1,000 college scholarships distributed through the James E. Clyburn Research and Scholarship Foundation. The students are Alicia Banks, Ashley Banks, Bobby Lawson, Brittany Broughton and Danika Delay.
Rep. Clyburn (D-SC) hosts the Rudolph Canzater Memorial Golf Tournament in Santee, S.C. every August to raise money for the scholarships. A total of 75 scholarships were awarded this year to students who hail from South Carolina’s sixth congressional district which includes all or portions of 15 counties, from the center of the state in Columbia, east to Marion County, and south to Colleton County, and then northwest to Columbia.
With five scholarship recipients, USC Upstate has the highest number of Clyburn scholarship recipients at any single university in South Carolina, according to John Perry, vice chancellor for university advancement.
Alicia Banks and Ashley Banks are sisters from St. Stephen who attended Timberland High School. Their parents are Jerry and Rosalind Banks. Alicia is pursuing a degree in biology and Ashley is in the pre-nursing program.
Bobby Lawson, from Hemingway, is the son of Bobby Lawson, Sr. He attended Hemingway High School, and plans to major in business administration with a concentration in accounting.
Brittany Broughton graduated from Lake Marion High School in Eutawville. She is the daughter of Shirley and Harry Broughton. She is an elementary education major.
Hailing from Lynchburg, Danika Delay attended Wilson High School. She is the daughter of Yvonne Delay.
