The holidays will come a little early for about 100 area middle and junior high school students Saturday as The Southeastern Institute of Manufacturing and Technology (SiMT) at Florence-Darlington Technical College hosts the second annual FIRST Lego League Robotics Regional Competition.
Student teams will present their robots to judges beginning at 8:45 a.m. with the competition starting at 11 a.m.
FIRST stands For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, which joined forces with toymaker, Lego, to create the FIRST Lego League Robotics international competition. Students from 12 Pee Dee schools, using FIRST Lego League guidelines, have spent months building their own robots.
The newly opened first phase of the SiMT, The Leatherman Advanced Manufacturing Center, will be turned into “pit” areas and a competition ring for the junior robot builders.
The competition is the first step toward the international Lego League championship. The top five teams competing in the SiMT contest will advance to the state tournament Feb. 16 at Clemson University.
