Since being diagnosed with colon cancer in 2008, Mullins High School varsity basketball coach Mark Gerald has showcased an admirable level of strength and enduring faith. Since taking over the program for the 1989-90 season, he’s become one of the most respected coaches in the state and brought a brand of basketball to Mullins that brings hundreds of people to the gym on game nights. Ironically, it’s during a challenging moment in his life, that Gerald reaches new heights in his career.

During the course of 21 years, he’s built a program that has become a championship contender, never missing the playoffs. The longtime coach has won hundreds of games on the court, but it’s his battle that extends off the court that is the subject of book written to inspire readers to have faith through adversity.

This week marks the beginning of another start to the prep football regular season. On Aug. 19 the Mullins Auctioneers will travel to Georgetown for a Week Zero contest. On the sidelines will be a familiar face on the Aucs coaching staff, one that has paced those sidelines for 30 years.
Mullins native Johnny “Bugga” Ellis is a marksman shooter on the basketball court, leading the Dillon Wildcats to a Class 2A lower state championship and state runner up finish in 2006. Since that time, he’s attended Francis Marion University, settling in as a redshirt freshman on Gary Edwards’ basketball team when he arrived. However, Ellis longed for the days to continue his basketball career and after multiple tryouts and mulling over a decision to change directions, he decided to join the USC Sumter basketball program this past week in an opportunity to continue playing the game he loves.
