I attended the Republican 7th Congressional District debate on May 14. We have a lot of good candidates to choose from, and a lot of enthusiasm since getting the seventh district back in South Carolina.

Florence County is losing a dedicated public servant. Florence County Councilman, Johnnie D. Rodgers, Jr. announced that he is resigning his position as District 5 representative due to health reasons effective June 29, 2012.
Don’t be surprised if Congress strikes our social security income. This country would be in ruin! Many people would probably have the urge to shoot the whole bunch. Don’t wait; shoot them now by voting them out of office! They have had their pie jobs too long!!
I haven't sent a letter to a public forum in a very long time, but I feel it necessary to do so now. I get frustrated when some people think they are a greater authority on food than the Bible.
In crafting legislation on school choice, perhaps our representatives should consider giving local school districts the ability to use non-district resources.
I am a resident in the town of Timmonsville and I am not pleased by the closing of the town’s police department. My position on this matter is not the result of any biases that I may have.
I don’t remember a time in my life when more attention has been brought out pitting the “rich” against the “poor.” Politicians and the media refer to it as “class warfare.”
The number of Americans considered obese is expected to rise from the current 34 percent to 42 percent by the year 2030, according to a study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine and discussed at Monday’s “Weight of the Nation” conference in Washington.
Water (H20) is made from an oxygen atom covertly bonded to two (2) hydrogen atoms. The molecules are so weakly bonded that supplying a little electrical energy, the bond will release.
Last summer, four 13-year-old girls approached me concerning creating a traveling basketball team because their current team was for 12 and under girls. I would be the first to say I’m not a basketball coach but more of an organizer.
Kudos to the Masterworks Choir, orchestra, soloists and most particularly conductor William Carswell for an outstanding performance Sunday, April 29, in the FMU Performing Arts Center.
In the past our presidents and governors have come from the high school debate team concept.
I read the article on the front page of the (Florence) Morning News April 29, 2012 about Mr. Ed Robinson who is running as a candidate for mayor of Florence.
Thank goodness our state lawmakers are finally considering a bill that, if passed, will make our lives a lot safer. Senate bill S1255, which would allow gun owners to take their guns into establishments that serve alcohol, deserves the strong support of all freedom-loving people.
I do not think the billboards with the Francis Marion / USC baseball score is a good idea. I have no ties to either school so this is not a personal issue for me. In the old Andy Griffith show there was an episode when Andy said to Opie, his son, “It’s easy to be a good winner, you just grin a lot.” I think Andy would call the billboards braggadocios.
I just finished reading Kathleen Parker’s April 29 Sunday column. Try as she may, the taint of her CNN stint with Spitzer is still present and counteracts her supposed “conservative” credentials.
As you are aware, our present Coroner, M.G. “Bubba” Matthews is retiring after 20 years of distinguished service to the citizens of Florence County. His decision not to seek re-election means that voters will choose a new coroner to fill this critically important office for our county.
We are often guilty of closing our eyes and minds to trouble all around us. The sad part is we usually wake up too late.
I would like to comment on two incidents that took place recently.
While deep in study recently I wanted to think of an idea of present situations that would be of interest to lots of people and I came up with some cool suggestions.
I was preparing a fire to cook a couple of steaks this past Saturday when I noticed a letter the Morning News published on Feb. 10 by Jack Parker that stated the Democrats are the enemy.
Time for another Obama tactic: Texas used its own state power to refuse funds for abortions and what does the Obama administration do? Cut off all power for all of women's health program initiatives. Indeed, it means more to the Obama administration to refuse legitimate health services to the women of Texas if the state is simply not allowing funds for abortions to be received and used. I guess we can now recognize the priority of this administration: abortion.
Regarding the proposed gymnasium on the north side of Florence: I saw a recurring theme that I found both interesting and concerning – that being the quality of the project.
I pray constantly that I will be taken before any of my three sons for I know I would feel wounded too for the rest of my life. And yes our children are beautiful be it boy or girl, and yes we will always grieve for this part of us that is gone.
Just in time for next Sunday’s Earth Day observance, a study published in last week’s Environmental Research Letters warns that animal manure and fertilizers used in growing animal feed emit large amounts of nitrous oxide, a powerful greenhouse gas.
