HARTSVILLE, S.C. _ Hartsville crowned its 2012 queens on Saturday night at the Center Theater. The winners will represent the city in the Miss South Carolina Pageant in July.
The theme for the pageants was “Who is Masquerading as the Next Miss Greater Hartsville and Miss Hartsville and Miss Greater Hartsville Teen and Miss Hartsville Teen.”
When the masks came off, Laine Blank was crowned Miss Greater Hartsville, and Mika Friday was chosen as Miss Hartsville. Samantha Martrano of Hartsville and senior at Mayo High School was named first runner-up. Keri Sanborn of Myrtle Beach was named second runner-up.
A clear favorite, Blank also won the People’s Choice Award, which was voted on during intermission, the evening gown and talent awards.
Blank, of Manning, is a student at the University of South Carolina, majoring in biology with a minor in music. She hopes to attend medical school after graduation.
For her talent, Blank performed on piano Mendelssohn’s “Songs Without Words Opus 53 No. 3.” Her platform is “Be a Hero: Donate Blood, Save a Life.”
In a telephone interview on Monday, Blank said it is an honor to represent Greater Hartsville as its new queen. She said Hartsville is much like her hometown. This will be her first year competing in the Miss South Carolina Pageant.
Mika Friday, of Columbia, is a senior at Francis Marion University majoring in English. She sang “Orange Colored Sky” in the talent competition. Her platform is “Spreading Depression Awareness.”
On Monday morning, Friday was still overwhelmed and excited to be the new Miss Hartsville. She said this is her second year of competing in the Miss America Pageant system, but her first win. As a student at FMU, Friday says she will be accessible for her duties as Hartsville’s new queen.
In the teen division, Madison Owens of Ware Shoals was crowned Miss Greater Hartsville Teen and Sara Beth Kreidler of Columbia was selected as Miss Hartsville Teen. First runner up was Whitney Hopkins of Hartsville and second runner up was Taylor Nealey of Darlington.
Owens was also the evening gown and talent winner.
The People’s Choice Award went to Sarah Floyd of Hartsville.
Owens performed a contemporary clogging routine to “You Can’t Stop the Beat.”
Kreidler did a modern tap routine to “Back in Black.”
