July 08, 2011 – Murrells Inlet, SC – Liza Mata, Artistic Director of Coastal Dance Centre (CDC) in Murrells Inlet, recently accompanied seven students to the prestigious Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) Finals held in New York City from March 17 – 22, 2011.
The Coastal Dance Centre ensemble students included Megan Grogan (16), Camilla Martin (14), Ashley Jones (10), Kaitlyn Cressman (11), Madison Lapham (11), Hannah Osborne (11) and Jenny Rogers (12). They participated alongside hundreds of dancers representing countries and dance schools from around the world. Their ensemble entries “Czech Polka”and “Flock” – choreographed by CDC Guest Master Teachers, Sandra Burnham and Carlos Dos Santos, respectively – competed with other formidable groups.
Solo competitors Ashley Jones and Hannah Osborne were recognized in the regional competition held earlier in the year in Torrington, Connecticut for placing among the Pre-Competitive Division’s “Top Twelve.” Hannah Osborne, the eleven year old daughter of Rob and Michelle Osborne qualified to compete in the Pre-Competitive Division. She was in an elite group of only 300 soloists chosen from 5,000 students from around the globe.
The Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) international student ballet scholarship competition conducts annual semi-final rounds in locations around the globe. Finalists earn the coveted honor of auditioning for scholarships to 28 of the world's most prestigious dance schools. “YAGP is particularly esteemed because of its philosophy that the best award a student dancer can receive is the opportunity to further his or her dance education,” explained Liza Mata, Director of Coastal Dance Centre. “It is an honor to compete on an international stage.”
