Johnsonville Baptist seniors take a look in the mirror

The senior group of the First Baptist Church in Johnsonville met in the beautiful new Family Life Center for their March meeting.

The program was entitled “The Man in The Mirror” and directed by the program chairman, Mrs. Marsha Hearn. As members and guests arrived and were seated they found at each place, amidst the St. Patrick’s Day adornments, a hand mirror. Mrs. Hearn directed each to look into the mirror and on a green card beside their place, write three things they saw in the mirror, her lesson being taken from the first chapter of James, especially verses 22-25.

She said, “The man in the mirror did the same thing we do. He looked at all of it, his reflection, his shortcomings and flaws, and straight away he forgot all about it as he turned away.

“For a moment we are impressed with our image or we are somewhat dismayed by the reflection and think it must be someone else. James says we look into the perfect law of liberty (the word of God) and like the man in the mirror we turn away and forget what we have read. He says we must remember it and do what it says. This sounds easy; we all think we know what God wants us to do.

In this same chapter there are six things we should do. They are imperative for us to do.

These are: Receive the Word, Be quick to hear; be slow to speak; be slows to anger, be humble and rid ourselves of sin.”

There are four men in the New Testament who are named James. This James, the author of the Book of James, was the brother of Christ. James was not a believer until he witnessed the ascension of Christ. Scholars believe James penned the book around 45 to 60 AD, making it the first book in the New Testament to be written. Unlike Paul, who wrote letters to the churches shaping doctrines and rules for worship, James speaks to the 112 tribes of Israel. He spoke to individuals about Christian Ethics and the sin of casual Christianity.

She asked those present to reflect on their relationship with the mirror. She then read some of the notes written about what each saw. Some were humorous, but it was a lesson to reflect daily on our lives and how others see us.

The green four-leaf clover decorations and the bountiful buffet table would have pleased St. Patrick had he been present.

The next meeting will be Thursday, April 14, at 6 P.M., when Greg Stuckey, a missionary will speak on his latest missions. The May meeting will be the annual fish fry, the date to be announced.
