FLORENCE - The Fifth Annual Pee Dee Cardiovascular Symposium takes place Wednesday, October 6, at the Floyd Conference Center in Florence for physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners.
According to Carolinas Hospital System officials, this program will provide updates on the latest treatment modalities for cardiac, vascular and neurovascular diseases. It will emphasize the diagnosis of illness and medical management, as well as interventional/surgical options for therapy.
The program includes:
Describe the definition of an Intensivist; how an Intensivist can improve patient survival rates and quality care and why the Intensivist-led model for critical care has become the gold standard.
Identify the significance of Cardiac Rehabilitation, the routine and information shared in Cardiac Rehab and the effects and benefits of Cardiac Rehab.
Describe MRI-Cardiac Device interactions; discuss issues of MRI compatibility and review legal issues related to scanning device patients.
Describe the relationship between diabetes and cardiovascular disease and how controlling diabetes decreases cardiovascular complications.
Recognize the most frequent complications related to diabetes.
Define the standard of care in medical/legal and clinical terms; recognize how the standard of care varies with the situation in which the care is delivered and evaluate practice guidelines, conflicting literature and ill-defined clinical situations from a standard of care perspective.
Learn the differences between COPD and asthma and differentiate between treatments useful for COPD and those for asthma.
Learn the role of smoking in the development of COPD and the impact of smoking cessation.
Describe the pathophysiological problems in COPD and how they influence choices of therapy.
Develop a strategy for use of long acting bronchodilators and newer modalities in the treatment of COPD.
Describe homeostasis in the cardiovascular patient; the effect of homeostasis on coagulation and review standard of care in maintaining homeostasis in relation to coagulation therapy.
Update and overview of the Federal Health Reform Act.
Updates for new treatment of CHF and review indications for Bi-ICD.
The symposium is designed for physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners in Northeastern South Carolina who see patients with heart and vascular disease, including congestive heart failure, stroke and those who suffer from rhythm disturbances.
