On Saturday night, Brock Strickland was crowned Miss Hartsville High 2010 at the Center Theater from a field of 24 contestants in grades nine through 12.

An 11th-grader, Strickland is the daughter of Sandy and Lori Strickland.

The top five were Madison Hasseler, first runner-up; Laura Richie, second runner-up; Logan Andrews, third runner-up; and Claire Brown, fourth runner-up. Holly Brown was voted Miss Congeniality, and Briel White was named Most Photogenic and a top 10 contender. In addition, the following were in the top 10 Kate Wilberger, Jordan Kelly, Jena Hodge and Ciara Walters.

Giving up her crown was Melli Baldwin, Miss Hartsville High 2009. She and the new queen were escorted by Mr. Hartsville High 2010 Zach Gainey.

The pageant theme was Rocking the Crown. Entertainment was provided by Ellen Folk, violinist; Miss Greater Teen Hartsville Jessie McKenzie, soloist; Brittany Caldwell, tap dancer; Miss Teen Hartsville Morgan Holley, soloist; and Justin Anderson, Hartsville Idol finalist, soloist.

Morgan Dampier was the mistress of ceremonies.

During the competition, the 10 finalists were asked an interview question.

The question asked of Strickland was “What bothers you most about our country today?” Her answer was terrorism. She explained that she had recently been to Washington, D.C., with a group and was confronted with lock downs in the city.

For her service project, which counted toward the contestant’s final score, Strickland collected old tennis shoes to be recycled. Strickland said she based her project on an existing project through Nike Inc. called Reuse-A-Shoe. Nike recycles and reuses old tennis shoes. Strickland collected more than 150 pairs of old tennis shoes from family and friends. She also posted pick up stations at the Hartsville YMCA, the Hartsville Memorial Library and her church, St. Luke United Methodist Church.

“The pageant was lots of fun, and at times, stressful, but I’m glad I did it now,” Strickland said.

On Monday during a telephone interview from school, the new Miss Hartsville High said it finally sunk in that she won when the announcement was made that morning at school. She said, thankfully, her friends hadn’t treated her any differently after her win.

“I wouldn’t want them to,” she said.

Strickland is a varsity soccer player and cheerleader at Hartsville High School. She is active in the Beta Club, Anchor Club, Spanish Club and National Honor Society. Her favorite subject is biology, and she hopes to attend Clemson or Wofford University upon graduation from high school and major in pre-med.

Strickland is also a competition dancer with Kelly School of Dance in Hartsville.
