From Where I Sit: Flowers brighten any day

»  Comments | Post a Comment

I was just a little disappointed Wednesday morning when I awoke and discovered no snow on the ground. That is until I went outside and discovered the first daffodil of the year blooming in my yard. Daffodils rank near the top of my list of favorite flowers along with daisies, yellow tulips and yellow roses. Honestly, I have a lot of favorite flowers. I like cut flowers, and, if I could afford it, I’d purchase a bouquet for every room in my house each visit to the grocery store. They are so tempting in those containers placed beside the checkout counter.

And after 30 years of marriage this month, my husband still doesn’t send me flowers on special occasions. On a trip to the grocery store once, I remember he brought me home yellow tulips for no reason. I was shocked and thrilled.

He’s sweet in many other ways; he just doesn’t understand paying for something that grows in the yard. I, on the other hand, don’t like spending time digging around in flowerbeds or doing yard work. I like to cut my flowers and depending on the season quickly return to the warmth or coolness of my house to enjoy.

My mother didn’t like cut flowers. She, like my husband, wanted to enjoy the flowers growing in the yard. Her favorites were day lilies, which flourish and grow abundantly in my yard.

Even during the recent snowfall, I found white, pale pink and deep pink camellias in bloom. I can’t take credit for any of the flowers blooming in my yard. They are all the handiwork of my mother and God. Now that she is gone, I only hope I can keep them alive and coming back year after year.

As soon as there are enough daffodil blooms in the yard, I’m going out early in the morning and cut some for my kitchen table. I like to go out early in the morning to find flowers for my table and then sit with a cup a coffee and enjoy their beauty.

My daughter, who I’m afraid shares my dislike for yard word, and I have a mother/daughter road trip planned this weekend to the Southern Home and Garden Show in Charlotte, N.C. This is always an enjoyable event if you can withstand the elbow-to-elbow crowd. The show has lots of spring flowers everywhere, some to just enjoy looking at and some to purchase. I also like looking at the latest in home décor and the rooms that have been decorated by local designers.

Also this weekend, some lucky girls in Hartsville will be getting flowers Saturday night at the Miss Hartsville High Pageant, which begins at 7 p.m. at Center Theater.

From where I sit, I’m read for spring and lots of flowers blooming inside and out.
