COLUMBIA -- Curious museum guests will have their chance to find out about all kinds of artifacts, antiques and heirlooms as the South Carolina State Museum presents the summer edition of one of its most popular events, the Museum Road Show, on Saturday, July 17.
Inspired by PBS’ “Antiques Roadshow,” the program will offer informal (verbal) appraisals of a variety of objects from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Local experts will be available in the fields of fine art, silver, pottery, furniture, books, jewelry, textiles and dolls, decorative arts as well as military artifacts.
“Aunt Martha’s silver tureen, Kewpie dolls, a Picasso print, Japanese bayonets, a Russian samovar, an Edgar Allan Poe first edition – one never knows what might turn up at the Museum Road Show,” said Meika Samuel, director of education and programs.
“Offering a second Museum Road Show during the summer months has proved to be very popular with Museum guests,” she said. “This event gives people the opportunity to learn more about that fabulous heirloom they inherited or that mystery item they found in a flea market. There’s a real curiosity about the history of these pieces as well as the actual appraisal value. We hear some great stories!”
Ticket prices are based on the number of items to be evaluated. Tickets are $15 for the first item ($12 for Museum members), $25 for two items ($20 members), $30 for three items ($25 members) and $35 for four items ($30 members). There is a limit of four items per person.
Participants are responsible for moving objects from their vehicles to the museum’s Atrium (where the event will occur) and back again. The museum assumes no responsibility for loss or damage to any object.
