As the 5th most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States, bladder cancer is a significant health concern. There are more than 70,000 new cases and 14,000 deaths each year. Bladder cancer has a recurrence rate of 50-80% and because it requires life-long surveillance, it is the most expensive cancer to treat on a per patient basis. It is estimated that $2.9 billion is spent in the US each year on the treatment of bladder cancer.
This Bladder Cancer Awareness Event is being held in conjunction with the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (BCAN, pronounced “beacon”), the first national advocacy organization dedicated to increasing public awareness of bladder cancer, advancing bladder cancer research, and providing educational and support services for the bladder cancer community. Founded in May 2005, BCAN is a cooperative effort among bladder cancer survivors, their families and caregivers, and the medical community.
