HARTSVILLE - On Friday, women were encouraged to wear red to bring attention to two of the leading causes of death in women - heart attacks and strokes. The Pilot Club held its annual Go Red Luncheon at Bizzell’s in Hartsville as part of the seventh annual National Wear Red Day for Women sponsored by the American Heart Association.
Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center Dietitian Kim Alton told members of the Hartsville Pilot Club and guests about women and cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death in women in South Carolina.
Risk factors for heart disease include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, family history, age, smoking and physical inactivity, said Alton.
She said eating a balanced diet and regular exercise can help lower a woman’s chance of getting heart disease.
