The Artisans of the South Carolina Cotton Trail will present their Second Annual SC Jazz Festival Fine Arts and Crafts Show on Saturday, Oct.17, in Cheraw. The show will be open from 9 to 7 p.m. and will be held at the Cheraw Police Department Conference Room, 258 Second St., Cheraw. The show is free, and open to the public.

There will be demonstrations by Cotton Trail artists in spinning, oil painting, and metalsmithing.

Work displayed will include oil paintings, hand made glass, jewelry, metalsmithing, prints, notecards, and more. All exhibiting artists and craftspeople have been juried into the Artisans of the South Carolina Cotton Trail.

Painter Ann Dowling, of Florence, will be exhibiting her oil paintings. Ann's painting of an Iris won Best in Show at the ASCCT Exhibit that is currently on display in the Burr Gallery at the Cheraw Recreation Department. In addition last year's feature artist, painter Vicky McLain, will also be exhibiting and demonstrating her paintings.

Special this year will be a demonstration of textile techniques and spinning by local artist MJ Martin, Professor at Northeastern Technical College in Cheraw. MJ says "I am a handweaver. I have always love fabrics, and began sewing on a treadle sewing machine as a child. My interest in spinning grew out of my interest and involvement in weaving." MJ purchases her fleece from a North Carolina sheep ranch, right as the sheep is shorn.

She says, "I like to start 'at the sheep' and then clean and card my own wool and spin it. I have enjoyed researching and learning how to use natural dyes for my yarns while also using some commercial dyes." Cleaning the wool alone takes over 24 hours.

An exhibit showing the progression from clean fleece through spinning to woven material is included in the ASCCT exhibit at the Burr Gallery in Cheraw, open during the month of October.
