An estimated 13 million babies are born premature each year and more than a million of them will die within the first month of life.
The findings come from a new report by the March of Dimes which says premature births account for nearly 10 percent of all births worldwide and 28 percent of
newborn deaths.
Africa saw the highest rate of premature births with North America close behind.
