The Carver High School Alumni Association recently held its second annual affair, which featured a weekend’s worth of activities at the school’s former site and other locations in Lake City.
The association held a meet and greet at Ronald E. McNair Middle School, formerly Carver High School, on Sept. 25. Chairman Rufus Timmons welcomed everyone who attended from the area and out of town. T-shirts were given out, food was served, and the attendees enjoyed fellowship with one another.
On Sept. 26, the association congregated at the Ronald E. McNair football field. Everyone took more time to fellowship and cooked on the grill as children played. The association took pictures of each class and had a DJ playing old-school music, and the original Ag Quartet — Clarence Hunter, Eugene Hunter, Sam Davis Fulmore and Frank McFadden — sang.
That night, the association had a banquet with more than 300 people in attendance at the Lake City Armory. The short program started with a welcome from Timmons, history by Cynthia W. Burgess and reflections by Ada Dicks. The association also watched a video of 2008 pictures and held a raffle with three winners.
On Sept. 27, the association attended Greater St. James AME Church. The Rev. Judge Joseph Wilson brought the morning message. After the service, the association dined at Ella’s Restaurant, and then everyone said their goodbyes until next year.
The Carver High School Alumni Association was organized in March 2007, when Rufus Timmons and John Gaston founders called a meeting at Lake City Elks Lodge. Officers were elected and a meeting time was established, the fourth Sunday of each month. The association migrated later to Ronald E. McNair Junior High School, where it meets every fourth Monday of each month.
The association consists of Lake City Colored School as well as Carver Elementary and High schools, including the areas of Olanta, Scranton, Coward and Camerontown.
