McLeod Diabetes Center Hosts 11th Annual Health Fair

The McLeod Diabetes Center has long been known for its excellence in diabetes care and outstanding work in community diabetes education. Each November, the center provides an extensive wealth of information at its largest community event, the Diabetes Health Fair.

In its eleventh year, the 2009 Diabetes Health Fair is scheduled for Saturday, November 7, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The event will be held in the McLeod Medical Plaza at 800 East Cheves Street in Florence.

The FREE Diabetes Health Fair includes blood sugar screenings, blood pressure screenings, and eye screenings. In addition, there will be foot checks, oral hygiene information, and diabetes related nutrition and medication information. Participants who bring their glucose monitors will have the opportunity for staff to change the monitor’s clock to reflect daylight savings time.

Many outstanding diabetes vendors will be present with the latest diabetes products. Everyone who attends the Diabetes Fair can register for great door prizes.

Special presentations throughout the day include:
10:00 a.m. - Breakfast Cooking Demonstration, McLeod Nutrition Services
11:00 a.m. - "Small Lifestyle Changes Can Yield Big Health Results", Jeannette Jordan, RD, CDE Nationally known health author and speaker
12:00 p.m. - Lunch
12:30 p.m. - Lunchtime Workout, Sandy Carlson, ACE, AFAA, Certified Personal Trainer, McLeod Health and Fitness Center
1:00 p.m. - Drew Rainwater, Motivational Speaker, A1C Champion

The McLeod Diabetes Center offers state-of-the-art inpatient and outpatient care to people with diabetes, with an extensive range of services provided by highly trained and experienced staff. The following services are available at the center by physician referral, and are covered by most insurance plans: Diabetes self-management education; Individual and group education classes; Nutritional counseling and carbohydrate counting education; Weight management; Diabetes foot care; Insulin self-administration; Individualized care plans; Insulin pump training; Insulin pen utilization; Training for home glucose monitoring; Individual exercise planning, and stress and time management.

Diabetes self-management classes are offered weekly, and free support groups, open to anyone, are held on the second Monday of each month except November.

The McLeod Diabetes Center also coordinates with McLeod Women's Health Services to assist patients with Gestational Diabetes, or women who develop high blood sugar (glucose) levels during their pregnancy.

The McLeod Diabetes Center has been recognized by the American Association of Diabetes Educators for meeting national standards of diabetes education.
