Parmars IGA has announced that Valerie Timmons, a Parmars IGA shopper and Marion resident, has won a national grand prize package in the IGA Hometown Healthy Challenge sweepstakes.

Timmons entered the sweepstakes at Parmars IGA during the Hometown Healthy Challenge, an event conducted Feb. 15 – March 14 in participating IGA stores nationwide to help shoppers make healthier lifestyle choices involving food and exercise. As a grand prize winner, Timmons receives a $1,000 cash and the opportunity to designate a community organization to receive $5,000 toward fitness programming on behalf of Parmars IGA.

Marion County Medical Center’s Wellness Center, the beneficiary chosen by Timmons, received the $5,000 donation at their facility on April 30.

Marion County Medical Center’s Wellness Center, a division of Marion Regional Healthcare System, is the only fitness-oriented, wellness center catering to the Marion and Mullins communities. The center uses exercise equipment and instructors to provide personalized fitness plans for members of any age group or fitness level, including special needs members who are handicapped or disabled. Reduced-rate memberships are available for families, groups, and senior citizens.

Timmons said she chose the Marion County Wellness Center because she recognizes the service it provides to her community. “The Wellness Center is the only real fitness facility of its kind in Marion county, so it is important that we do all we can to support it.”

“This donation came at a great time for us,” Harry Martin, physical therapist and rehab manager for the Wellness Center, said. “We’ve been making do with what we have for quite a while now. Now we’re looking to replace some of our older equipment and create additional group programs for our members. We’re very thankful to Ms. Timmons and to IGA for giving us the resources we need to help our community members stay active, and fulfill our mission ‘to improve the health status and quality of life of the diverse populations we serve.’”

“Health and wellness is a growing concern all across America, and we at Parmars IGA were so pleased to have the opportunity to bring healthier lifestyle resources to Marion through the IGA Hometown Healthy Challenge,” Alpa Parmar, owner of Parmars IGA, said.

“Having a winner from our store is an added bonus. We’re thrilled that the Wellness Center has been selected to receive the $5,000 donation. We’re already looking forward to the next national event!”
