The Swamp Fox Quilters Guild Challenge 2009 is on display at the Hartsville Museum through Aug. 29.
Each year guild members choose the best of the best from among the entries in challenge. Quilters must incorporate into their designs the theme chosen for that year. This year the theme was "Oh, My Stars."
Forty-two quilts were completed by the quilters and are now on display.
Karen Kirkland's Ocean Stars and Gentle Jelly Fish was chosen Best in Show. It also received a first-place ribbon in Best Use of Color category.
Other ribbons given in Best Use of Color were: Janice Davis, Scrappy Stars, second place; and June Jenkins, Rainbow Stars, third place.
Most Creative ribbons were presented to Janice Davis, Black Hawk, first place; Karen Kirkland, Oh, My Starfish, second place; and Carolyn Brackat, Stars and Shell Shock, third place.
Best Machine Work ribbons were presented to Janice Davis, Scrappy Stars, first place; Susan Rayment, My Feathered Star, second place; and Jim Fahey, Pointed, third place.
Best Hand Work ribbons went to Judy Voss, Star of Bethlehem, first place; Pat Couch, Thirteen Colonies, second place; and Elaine Holmes, Lonely Star, third place.
There is a People's Choice Award which will be presented in August to the person whose quilt receives the most votes during the exhibit's stay at the museum.
Elaine Holmes of Florence was in charge of this year's challenge. She was chosen by the guild president, Frances Kelley of Hartsville, to oversee the project and select the theme.
Holmes said she chose the theme Oh, My Stars because there are so many quilting patterns using stars.
This year they had nine quilters enter who had never entered the challenge before, including the single male entry of Jim Fahey who took third place in Best Machine Work. Fahey said this was not only his first entry it was only his second quilt.
"We have about a year and half to work on the quilts," Holmes said.
The challenge theme for 2010 was announced in January 2009.
"I thought they were exceptionally beautiful (this year)," said Holmes who has been quilting for about 15 years.
Holmes said she had always been interested in quilting and decided to join a church group in Maryland where she grew up. Holmes said she found quilting to be very relaxing.
Anyone interested in joining the local quilting group is invited to visit. The Swamp Fox Quilters meet the first Thursday of each month at John Calvin Presbyterian Church in Florence, corner of Marsh Avenue and Third Loop Road, at 9:30 a.m.
The group has monthly programs and show and tell at each meeting so that members can show projects they are working on or have just completed.
They also have a work session on the third Thursday of the month.
Dues are $15.
