Although the exact date is unknown, Americans first enjoyed hot dogs at a baseball stadium at the turn of the 20th century and they continue to be a staple at ballparks across the country.
Some attribute the introduction of the hot dog to America’s favorite pastime as early as 1893 to Chris von der Ahe who owned the St. Louis Browns.
The German immigrant also owned an amusement park, beer garden and brewery near the Browns’ home, Sportsman’s Park, but there is little to no evidence that hot dogs were ever sold at the park.
According to whatscookingamerica.net, the term “hot dog” came about during a Giants game in 1902.
Unable to sell his ice cream on a cold day, Harry Mozley Stevens tried his hand at selling dachshund sausages on rolls.
The vendors yelled, “They’re red hot! Get your dachshund sausages while they’re red hot!”
Different ballparks are known for signature hot dogs, and the Redwolves recently introduced the “Devil Dog.”
The devilishly delicious dog is topped with chili, nacho cheese, onions and jalapeños. Don’t forget to grab a fork and several napkins when you order one!
