The second annual Cotton Harvest Bluegrass Festival in downtown Hartsville begins Friday night, Oct. 24, and continues throughout the weekend on Saturday and Sunday. Hosted by Hartsville Downtown Development Association and the City of Hartsville, the festival is located along South Carolina’s historic and scenic Cotton Trail and will take place at the height of the 2008 area cotton harvest season. Co-hosting the 2008 festival will Hartsville will be the South Eastern Bluegrass Association of Lynch’s River County Park and Conway’s Rivertown Bluegrass Society.
The 2008 Cotton Harvest Bluegrass Festival features the winning group of the 2008 RenoFest Bluegrass Festival S.C. State Bluegrass Band Championship in March of 2008. The winner, Church Street Blues Bluegrass Band from Hermitage, Pa., will headline the event. Also performing at the 2008 festival are Deeper Shade of Blue from Monroe, N.C., Pee Dee region favorites Sounds of Grass, and Hartsville’s own Slope Valley.
The festival begins Friday evening with a free "block party" downtown Hartsville at Burry Park starting at 6 p.m. with an "open mic stage" for participating bluegrass enthusiasts, followed by a double concert from 7 until 9 p.m. with Slope Valley and Church Street Blues. On Saturday, a continuous bluegrass concert from 1:30 until 9:30 p.m. will be held in the Center Theater with all four festival bands performing in the afternoon and evening. Church Street Blues will give their final performance of the weekend on Sunday at a free gospel concert at 10:30 a.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church.
