This is National Pet Week. If you have been thinking about getting a pet, now would be a good time to visit the Marion Animal Shelter and see what might be waiting for you to come and take them home. Helping to take care of a pet is a great way for kids to learn responsibility. If the pet of your choice is a dog that is on the “lean side” don’t let that stop you. One of today’s recipes is for treats that will help fatten up a thin dog. I also have a treat for cats too. Please be a responsible pet owner and have your cat or dog spayed or neutered. The Marion Humane Society offers rebates to help you. Just send a copy of the paid vet bill to P.O. Box 932, Marion, 29571.
Doggie Peanut Cheese Balls
2 cups evaporated milk, undiluted
1 box oatmeal
1 dozen hard boiled eggs, chopped
1 lb. jar crunchy peanut butter
1 jar wheat germ
1 lb. hamburger
8 oz. cream cheese, room temperature
1 envelope unflavored gelatin (Knox)
In one bowl, pour the evaporated milk over the oatmeal and set aside. In a second large bowl, place all the other ingredients. Start mixing, hands work well. When all the milk is absorbed into the oats, add that mixture, and mix again. When thoroughly blended, form into meatball/walnut sized balls. (I used a small ice-cream type scoop intended for cookie dough.) Freeze on cookie sheets and transfer to zip-lock bags when hard. Keep frozen until needed, then remove a few at a time, allow to thaw, and feed as snacks.
Yield: I halved the recipe and had 64 balls
