Siders returns from trip

Susan Siders, respiratory therapist and owner of Home Therapy, Inc., in Marion, recently returned from New Mexico for a women’s convention for education and to evaluate a new mastectomy product line. In March, Siders was honored to be asked by the S.C. American Association for Respiratory Therapist to go to Washington, along with other AARC representatives from all of the states, to speak, with representatives about the Medicare oxygen cuts, respiratory therapist rehab bill, and other issues. In April, Susan was asked to serve on the S.C. Medical Equipment Association Board.

Stanley receives scholarship

The James E. Clyburn Research and Scholarship Foundation has named Janeasha Stanley of Marion as a recipient of the Rudolph Canzater Scholarship for the 2008-09 academic year.
The scholarship award was presented during an awards banquet that Clyburn hosted. Stanley is one of approximately 100 students who received such an award. Stanley is the daughter of Racheal Gillard and James Stanley. She graduated from Marion High School and plans to attend Columbia College.

Davis, Richardson named Outstanding Employees

Kimberly G. Davis and David B. Richardson, each of Marion, have been named outstanding staff employees of the year at Francis Marion University.
The awards were presented July 30 during the staff awards luncheon. Davis is assistant director of institutional research and human resource assistant and Richardson is a craftsman supervisor for building maintenance. Davis has been employed at FMU for 22 years; Richardson, for 19. Both were cited for their dedication to their jobs and for service above and beyond the call of duty. Davis and Richardson received plaques and $1,000 checks in recognition of winning the annual award.
Other awards were given, among those a 20-year service recognition to Mary L. Batson of Marion, coordinator of classification, compensation and employment; Angela C. Cantey of Mullins, administrative assistant for biology; and David S. Robinson of Mullins, supervisor of residence buildings/housing maintenance.
Among the nine employees recognized for retiring from FMU were Myra M. Hall of Mullins, coordinator of classification, compensation and employment; and Hannah D. Platt of Dillon, custodian.

Capps, Cox to attend Governor's School

Anna Capps of Marion and China Cox of Mullins have been accepted to the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics. They will join 70 other students from 29 counties as the class of 2010. Capps is the daughter of Pamela Dellinger and Andrew Capps and Cox is the daughter of Rob and Susan Cox. The South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) is a public, residential high school for academically talented and motivated juniors and seniors. It offers college-level courses and a hands-on curriculum with a special focus on science, math, technology and research.

McMillan receives Ph.D. accepts faculty position

Samuel Lucas McMillan graduated from the University of South Carolina with the Ph.D. in political science on Aug. 9. His dissertation, “Transforming Statecraft: The Involvement of American State Governments and Governors in U.S. Foreign Relations,” examined the increasing international involvement of states and governors since the 1950s. McMillan has accepted a tenure-track position as assistant professor of political science at Lander University in Greenwood. Beginning this fall, he will teach courses in international and American politics as a faculty member in Lander’s College of Business and Public Affairs. He has published essays in newspapers, as well. He graduated from Mullins High School as valedictorian and went on to earn a Bachelor's of Arts degree from Wofford College and an Master's of Arts from the University of Warwick in England. McMillan is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel D. McMillan of Mullins, the grandson of Martha G. McMillan and the late W. V. McMillan of Mullins and the late Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lucas Horton of Abbeville.

Enzor matriculating

Gilbert Elvington Enzor of Nichols will matriculate into his senior year at Hargrave Military Academy on Aug. 17. Before classes begin, he will participate in a two-week football camp as well as one week of officers commissioning school. While at home this summer, Elvington attended Palmetto Boys’ State and was sponsored by the Nichols American legion Post No. 82.

Allen gets citizenship award

Joshua Seth Allen recently received the Governor’s Citizenship Award. He traveled to Columbia to receive his medal and meet Gov. Mark Sanford. He also attended Palmetto Boys State at the University of South Carolina. The Rotary Club sponsored him. Allen is a senior at Mullins High School, where he is in the Beta Club and on the varsity baseball team. He attends Mullins-Marion Freewill Baptist Church, where he is a member. He is the son of Ricky and Phyllis Pridgen Allen.

Gasgue in real-life ‘CSI Iraq’

Senior Airman Kathy Gasque is one many U.S. Air Force Airmen serving in with explosive ordinance disposal teams for Multi-National Division-Baghdad to fight the threat of improvised explosive devices. “We do crime investigations on bomb sites, conducting post-blast analysis to help us combat future attacks and track the IED cells where the deadly weapons originate,” Gasque said. She is a network analyst and volunteered to deploy for one year. Gasque said though she doesn’t regret volunteering for the mission, she admits that she endured a little culture shock as she began working with the soldiers of the 3rd Brigade Team, 4th Infantry Division.
“I do a lot of analytical work with the Army intelligence guys and really enjoy the things I get to do here – plus I get to do something for my fellow service members,” she said in a story posted on the Web at http://www.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123110265. Gasque is the daughter of Michael and Cynthia Gasque of Lexington and the granddaughter of Alice Gasque of Marion.
