»  Comments | Post a Comment

Summer is almost over which signals cooler weather and more time spent indoors. This means it's time to catch up on your reading and what better way to do it than with purchases from the Friends of the Hartsville Memorial Library's annual book sale. The sale is going on today, Saturday and Sunday at the library.

Sunday hours are 2 - 5 p.m. and to encourage you to purchase, all items are $1 per plastic shopping bag. Friday hours will be from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Items for sale include 10 tables of fiction hard cover books, children's items, videocassettes and DVDs, audio books and classics. The nonfiction items are divided into categories including religion, health, biography, psychology, cook books, home improvement and art to name a few, said Audrey Tripp of the library
.
A hardcover adult book sells for $2, a trade paperback sells for $1 and mass market paperbacks are 50 cents. Children's books are a quarter for paperback and 50 cents for hard covers. The annual sale has been taking place in Hartsville for many years and has been held in numerous buildings around town when the library didn't have the space. The sale and membership dues provide the funding for the Friends' annual budget.

"They support additional resources such as children's programming during the summer reading period, they supplement the book budget, giving us one of the most well rounded collections in the county," Tripp said. "They provide the snacks for the bi-weekly family movies and purchase the viewing rights for the community."
Tripp said the Friends also paid for the new paint in the children's section and the carpet that was installed in the meeting room. Whenever the library has a need for something outside the standard budget set by the county, the Friends' takes it into consideration. Friends membership runs October through September. The sale typically raises $2,500 for the Friends.
