Linda Williams of Conway knows first hand the struggles of paying for her medicines. “You can't afford it. I take blood pressure medicine. I can't afford right at $100 every month, no way. So right now I don't take it."
A new prescription discount card program in Horry County starts January 1, 2008. The goal is to help people like Linda Williams. It's available to everyone regardless of age, income, or existing health coverage, and designed to save you at least 20 percent off the retail price of prescribed drugs. It can also be used for pet prescriptions. That’s good news for Williams. "Every little bit helps anybody, especially when you don't have insurance."
The program is sponsored by the National Association of Counties. Nationwide, more than 59-thousand pharmacies accept the card. Horry County Council Chairperson, Liz Gilland says "There are folks each month in this area that have to decide do I get my medicine refilled this month or do I pay bills and you can look at a 20 percent discount and it cost you nothing to participate that's real money and that is going to make significant difference in the lives of a lot of folks." The program is easy. You don’t have to enroll or pay a membership fee. "If you don't have insurance, you're under insured, if you fall between the cracks or Medicaid/Medicare who ever gets prescription drugs can use this card and it's free."
Free. A word you don't hear very often in the high priced world of health care, but one Williams is banking on. "It's not a solution, no, but every little bit helps."
Cards will be available at all Horry County Libraries, The Veteran’s Office, and several other locations. For a complete list and more information about the program, go to www.horrycounty.org or call toll free 1-877-321-2652.
