The American Red Cross will hold its sixth annual “Show You Care,” blood drive in an effort to encourage blood donations during a typically slow time of year.
Mike Skipper, the Red Cross donor recruitment supervisor for Florence and Myrtle Beach, said the blood drive is an annual effort to help out with a critical blood need.
Throughout the rest of the year, area high schools hold blood drives, but during the holiday season, school is out and the American Red Cross is on its own to meet the needs of the community, Skipper said.
“Our donor pool decreases, while the usage of blood increases,” he said.
A recent increase in accidents and fires in the Pee Dee has caused the demand for blood and blood products to rise, Skipper said.
“Christmas time and summer are probably our toughest time to collect blood,” he said. “We have to collect 500 units of blood each day to meet our hospital needs. We don’t do that in South Carolina, and we have to import blood from other regions to meet that need.”
It’s a bad situation that becomes worse during the holidays season.
“People can make it better by coming in and donating blood,” Skipper said. “By donating blood, they are saving up to three people’s lives.”
The donated blood can save as many as three lives, since it can be divided into blood, platelets and plasma.
“We’re also going to give them a complimentary long-sleeved T-shirt for coming in on that day,” Skipper said. “It’ll only take up about an hour of their time to come in and save three lives.”
In the meantime, area churches are continuing to help with the blood drive efforts until school starts back and those efforts resume, he said.
