Balancing the Stressors of the Season

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The holiday season is supposed to be a time of joy, togetherness and peace. And most of the time it is. But the holidays can be stressful, too. Tight budgets, cramped schedules, and unmet expectations are also hallmarks of the season. Lighthouse Care Center of Conway offers some simple steps for a brighter holiday season.  It starts with good planning and good communication.   The season can be overwhelming for those who don’t plan and prioritize their time well.

Reduce the Stress of the Holidays:

Plan- Think about the kinds of things that have produced stress for you in the past. Brainstorm ideas that will make these situations easier.

Pace Yourself- Consider what you can realistically do. Use a calendar so you can see your obligations in concrete terms.

Use Moderation- Allow yourself special treats, but remember the remorse that unwanted weight gain or a debilitating hangover can produce. Also remember that alcohol is a depressant drug and can only exacerbate the blues.

Acknowledge Painful Feelings Associated with the Holidays- If you are feeling the loss of a loved one or remembering disappointing childhood events, don’t ignore them. Allow yourself to experience them. Talk to someone who is understanding and supportive.

Take Time for Yourself- Try making a schedule, and figure out how best to maximize your time. Learn how to say “No” to commitments that you don’t think you can manage. Relax, take a walk, and collect your thoughts. Reflect on what the holidays mean to you. Exercise three times per week.

Reduce the Financial Stress- Make a budget plan and stick to it. Gifts made from the heart are priceless. Make someone dinner, bake them cookies, or offer to baby-sit. Run errands for a friend in lieu of a present, or just visit with them-your time is a precious gift.

Focus on the Positive Aspects of the Holiday Season- In spite of the stress that the holidays can bring, there are positive and happy moments to enjoy and recognize too. Think of those times and situations you enjoy, or have enjoyed in the past. Don’t just focus on the negatives. In the final analysis, the holiday season is time-limited and life, as always, will return to its normal routine after the New Year
