Theater group prepares for Lake City Camelot production

More than 60 members of the local communities are set to take to the stage March 1 for the Lake City Community Theatre production of Alan Jay Lerner’s Camelot.

Performers and behind-the-scenes artists have been preparing and rehearsing for the show with a musical score by music Frederick Loewe since before the holidays. They are set to portray King Arthur, his court and a myriad of characters in the theater group’s 14th production since their inaugural performance of “Music Man” in 1989.

Glen Gourley, who directs productions at Francis Marion Universtiy, has directed all but two of the productions in Lake City.

“There’s always been such music talent in this town,” said Marge Urn, an all-round champion of the theater group who works to promote the performances, sell tickets, and prompt cast members.

Urn has participated in all productions since the second - either on the stage or behind the scenes, or rather, behind the curtains.

The petite Urn is tasked with hauling the heavy drapes on cue and says she always wears gloves to do so.

“I don’t sing,” Urn joked.

Other, however, do, and the cast of musically-talented community members performing the Lerner’s lyrics includes: Roger Kirby as King Arthur; Chrissy Fennell as Guenevere; Eric Stevenson as Merlyn; Gary Michael as Lancelot; Blake Graham as Mordred; and Mamie Harris as the sorceress Morgan le Fey.

Stevenson said he and his family have enjoyed being involved with the productions for many years.

“When you are in the theater you can be somebody else completely,” said Stevenson, “you’re completely free to create a new persona on stage.”

Stevenson said the productions allow people to get out there and have “a great time with everybody.” Stevenson also said the performances have helped his children develop their talents and build “confidence and ability with a lot of different things; there’s so much in art, putting together the teamwork…,” he said.

“Those are some of the things that I really love about the theater experience,” he said.

Stevenson said that the cast members “put so much time into it from November all the way up till the curtain closing that at times you think, ‘urgh’. But we love it and we keep on coming back every year.”

Tickets for this year’s performance, scheduled for March 1 through 4, are currently available at the Greater Lake City Chamber of Commerce offices. Performances are March 1 through 4.
