Myrtle Beach — WaterScapes, the casual fine dining restaurant within Myrtle Beach, S.C.'s Marina Inn at Grande Dunes, has received the 2010 Santé Culinary Hospitality Award from Santé, the Magazine for Restaurant Professionals in the sustainability category for the Southeast division of the United States. Of all categories, it is the only business in the Carolinas to be recognized among the list of winnrs.
Representatives from WaterScapes will be honored at the 2010 Santé Awards Gala Dinner on Nov. 9 at the Villagio Inn & Spa in Yountville, Calif.
Now in their thirteenth year, the Santé Awards were created to recognize excellence in restaurant food, wine, spirits, and service hospitality. The Santé Awards program is the only peer-judged national restaurant and hospitality competition in North America.
James Clark, executive chef at WaterScapes, leads a culinary team dedicated to providing the finest in sustainable dining. Fish served at the casual fine dining restaurant is hand-selected from fishing boats in Murrells Inlet, S.C., and featured nightly on the “Fish Board” with local selections like hog snapper, rock hinds, triggerfish, black bass and amberjack. Rounding out the fresh menu are items including beef, chicken and pork, which are complimented with fresh fruits and vegetables from local farms such as the Indigo Farms in Little River, S.C., and Ovis Hill Farm in Timmonsville, S.C.
“It is a huge honor that Santé, a well-respected industry magazine, has recognized WaterScapes as a leader in sustainability efforts in our region and our country,” said James Clark, executive chef at WaterScapes. “We are committed to serving only the freshest seasonal local cuisine to our guests. It feels wonderful to be recognized for our efforts.”
Santé features award-winning editorial on food, wine, and spirits management for restaurant professionals. Santé has a circulation of 32,000 and a pass-along readership of over 144,000 in full-service restaurant and hospitality establishments across the country.
Earlier this year, WaterScapes was named a Platinum Partner in South Carolina's Sustainable
Seafood Initiative. It is the first restaurant in the city of Myrtle Beach to receive this recognition from the program, which strives to encourage restaurants across the state to make local, environmentally-friendly seafood selections for their menus.
The initiative, taken on by the South Carolina Aquarium, has ranked WaterScapes its highest score because it has found that the restaurant's menu has gone above and beyond the program's basic requirements.
Additionally, WaterScapes participates in the “Certified SC Grown – Fresh On the Menu” program where participating chefs agree to prepare menus that include at least 25 percent certified South Carolina-grown foods and products in season and feature the Fresh on the Menu brand.
WaterScapes is located on the lower level of the AAA four-diamond Marina Inn at Grande Dunes and is open to the public daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
