HARTSVILLE - On March 19, Dylan Sneed will revive his Dallas-based concert series Alphabet Soup at The Midnight Rooster, 136 E. Carolina Ave., Hartsville. Music starts at 8:30 p.m. Admission is free, but there is a $5 suggested donation for the featured artist, Columbia's Hannah Miller.
When not writing his own music, Sneed found other ways to stretch his creativity in his former home base of Dallas, Texas. For every installment of his 2007-08 concert series called Alphabet Soup, he and several Dallas area songwriters built a unique 10-song set of covers and originals around an audience-suggested word. Each new word began with a randomly selected letter (e.g., "H" is for "Hasselhoff"). Together Sneed and his friends learned and performed nearly 160 songs in nine months. There are 10 letters left to be chosen, leaving 10 more installments of the series.
For the first Hartsville edition of Alphabet Soup -- "Y" is for "Young" -- Sneed has made a few changes. For one, every installment will feature a regional artist, who will play a short set of original material in between the Soup songs. The featured artist will also collaborate with Sneed on a couple of songs throughout the night. The first featured artist will be Columbia's Hannah Miller.
"This concert series is about encouraging creativity, not only for the artists but the audience as well," Sneed said. While the musicians play, the audience will be busy coming up with potential themes for the next installment.
"It's an interactive experience for the audience and performer," he said.
