Craig Alberty and Joyous Noise will perform this Sunday at the Timrod Park Amphitheatre.
Joyous Noise is a jazz ensemble specializing in jazz standards from the past 50 years.
The group was formed about five years ago. Since its formation, many combinations of musical personnel have been used based on the setting or type of performance required, including concerts, dinners and weddings.
For this Sunday’s performance, Joyous Noise will feature a quartet composed of Craig Alberty on saxophones, Stan Kennedy on guitar, Terry Roberts on bass and Sharon Tanner as vocalist. Both Alberty and Roberts are members of the music faculty at Francis Marion University.
The individual musical preferences of the members of Joyous Noise are varied, from classical to Christian to bluegrass, with a little bit of everything else in between.
Alberty, who arranges most of the material for Joyous Noise, said his earliest jazz influences were the concert jazz bands of the ’70s, bands that included musicians such as Stan Kenton, Buddy Rich and Maynard Ferguson. His current listening choices are a little more eclectic, including not just jazz, but also music of the Baroque period as well as contemporary concert music.
