Borrowed Time group to perform "Unplugged" holiday concert

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The Honda of South Carolina Concerts in the Park series continues Sundaywith Borrowed Time “Unplugged for the Holidays.”
Borrowed Time will perform from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the main gallery of the Florence Museum.
After being “rained out” of a scheduled Timrod Park appearance a few years ago, Borrowed Time was rescheduled that season for a winter concert in the museum. The band enjoyed playing the acoustic concert so much that they jumped at the chance to repeat the fun this December.
“We’ve never really had a gig that we didn’t enjoy — whether burning up in the middle of the summer or freezing at a hunting club in February — but having the opportunity to sit on stools and entertain ‘living room style’ is the kind of playing we probably enjoy the most,” said vocalist and bass player Sharon Tanner. The Florence Museum is the perfect venue for such an intimate concert.
Borrowed Time is well-known throughout the Pee Dee, having played for all sorts of festivals, private parties, political fund-raisers, charity events, church revivals, family picnics, and even the occasional “dive” (those primarily in the earlier years of the band, they say). When asked about the most memorable gigs they’ve played, the band members all seem to have favorites.
Wade McMillan remembers playing often at an old barn at the home of a friend of his in Latta. The barn had been converted into a small concert venue, complete with lighting and a raised stage and was a wonderful place to play.
Stanley Thompson (banjo and vocals) and Sharon Tanner both mentioned playing at a fundraiser for George W. Bush, when he was running for office. They had their picture taken with the soon-to-be president.
Lead guitarist and vocalist Johnny Tanner especially enjoys the Florence Museum’s Annual Oyster Roast.
“The crowd is always appreciative, and the food is amazing!” Tanner said.
But fiddle player Dawn Fraser might have the best memory of all. Several weeks ago her parents, sister, brother-in-law and young nephew visited from Scotland and had a chance to go to a gig with them and hear the band for the first time. Sharing her music with her far-away family was truly special for her.
No matter where Borrowed Time plays, whether in a large auditorium, a backyard, or in someone’s living room, the band members’ love of music and their enjoyment of each other is always evident. The relaxed atmosphere of an “unplugged” concert at the Florence Museum will surely bring out the best in the band and usher in the holiday season for those attending.
