Hard Rock Park on time, budget as spring opening nears

The Hard Rock Park, the world’s first rock ‘n’ roll theme park, has gathered a head of steam in 2007 and is barreling toward its projected opening date in spring 2008 in Myrtle Beach.

The $400 million, 140-acre music-themed amusement park is the conceptual idea from the world-famous Hard Rock Cafe restaurant/rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia museums. The park is ahead of schedule in construction and on budget, said park vice president of marketing and sales Kerry Graves.

“We’ve been extremely fortunate,” he said. “We’re ahead of our construction deadlines. It’s been unseasonably warm and dry, which isn’t good for other industries, but it’s been great for us.”

The theme park will feature more than 40 attractions for music fans and thrill seekers, including signature roller coasters, children’s play areas, restaurants, cafes, retail stores, two amphitheaters, an indoor theater, an outdoor theater and a park-wide sound system.

Hard Rock Park’s largest roller coaster, Led Zeppelin — The Ride, is the park’s main attraction. Five of the park’s roller coasters have received their finishing touches. Each of the roller coasters will be featured in one of the park’s five musical zones, which are “Rock ‘N’ Roll Heaven,” “Cool Country,” “Lost in the ‘70s,” “British Invasion” and “Born in the USA.”

“It’s extremely exciting and rewarding,” Graves said. “It’s a little awe-inspiring. I will be in the office for a week then go out on a site tour and it’ll be like night and day from the last time I was out there. Things are coming along so quickly. It’s a bit magical, actually.”

Park personnel has been encouraged by the amount of early sales for its annual passes. The $150 passes are good for the park’s open season and includes parking and admission to scheduled concerts and events. The annual passes have been popular Christmas gifts, Graves said.

“They are selling real well, and they’re a great deal,” he said. “You pay $150 and come back as many times as you want in a year’s time when each individual visit would cost you right at $50. Over the course of a year, that becomes a great bargain.”

A number of concert announcements are expected to be made within the first couple of months in 2008. The park has plans to sponsor a Rocktoberfest event and Halloween events in October, a Christian music series in November and a number of Christmas events in November and December. Several more rides and attractions are to be announced, as well, Graves said.
