HARTSVILLE - Looking for a deal on nearly new clothing? Check out Hartsville’s newest consignment shop, Bloomingdeals, on Fifth Street beside Family Dollar that opened March 1.
Owner Fran Jones of Bishopville specializes in designer and name brand clothing for men, women and children. All the clothes are tagged with sizes, organized and rotated out at least every 90 days.
“I specialized in clothing because it’s a real need,” Jones said, but she also carries furniture, household items, jewelry, shoes, purses, books and miscellaneous goods.
She opened her first shop in Bishopville three years ago after she lost her job. This year, she left the 2,600-square-foot building behind, found her Fifth Street location available and decided to move to a bigger area and to a roomier 7,500-square-foot space.
The recession has made her business grow as more people search out deals. Hartsville has at least a half dozen second-hand, consignment or thrift shops.
But Jones is quick to define her business as something special.
“This is not a yard sale or a thrift store,” she said. “If I wouldn’t buy it, I won’t sell it.”
Jones doesn’t accept stained items or those missing buttons from her 380 consigners. She is taking additional consignments by appointment and said she needs more clothes sizes 16 and up but will take anything that’s new or nearly new.
“I try to give people more than they expect in a consignment shop,” Jones said. “I’m picky about what I take.”
Her newest arrivals are prom and Easter dresses. She has some suits for boys and men too since she has found a third of her customer base in Hartsville are men.
Bloomingdeals will hold a grand opening celebration in April and is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday through Saturday.
Jones’ father is The Button King Dalton Steven. She lives in Bishopville and has two daughters, two grandsons and one granddaughter.
On your next visit, you’ll get to meet two of Jones’ four-legged family members, Reba and Jojo, Jack Russell pups who are often behind the counter with her.
