FLORENCE — Farm Service Agency State Executive Director Laurie C. Lawson announced the South Carolina State SAFE project has been expanded to include Clarendon, Darlington, Dillon, Florence, Lee, Marion, Marlboro and Williamsburg counties. Originally, SAFE was limited to Allendale, Bamberg and Barnwell counties.
SAFE is a special segment of the Conservation Reserve Program. South Carolina has an initial allotment of 2,300 acres for SAFE. SAFE acres will be used to establish and maintain native early successional habitat on cropland to benefit specific bird species.
All eligibility requirements that are applicable to the Continuous Reserve Program will apply, such as required cropping history. Applications will be approved on a first-come, first served basis. No application will be approved until a Conservation Plan has been completed and approved. FSA will begin taking offers for SAFE on April 1.
Approved applicants will receive an annual rental payment for 10 years, a sign up bonus of $100 per acre, cost-share and practice incentive bonuses.
