MYRTLE BEACH - The United Way of Horry County recognized the efforts of more than 200 of its volunteers during a luncheon Thursday at the Dunes Golf & Beach Club.
According to a news release, the volunteers have helped raise $1,261,533 since the kickoff of the United Way's county-wide annual campaign last September. That money will fund 36 local Community Partner programs through the coming year.
“Given ongoing economic uncertainty, we’re especially pleased to be able to deliver the $1 million plus dollars to our 36 Community Partners” Steve Chapman, General Campaign Chairman for United Way said in the release. “There are so many folks in need right now – and we’re grateful that our Community Partners will be able to continue to lend them a hand.”
“I can’t say enough good things about our volunteers and the tremendous job they’ve done this year,” David DuRant, President of United Way of Horry County said. “All the donor dollars that have been so generously pledged will be put to great use in Horry County during this year.”
More than 200,000 Horry County residents were helped by United Way Community Partners in 2008 and the numbers coming in for 2009 are exceeding that total, the release said.
Immediately following the luncheon, United Way of Horry County held its annual meeting, which included implementing updated by-laws, elected new officers and board members to serve for the upcoming year and introduction of the Community Outreach Council along with the roster of Charter Members.
