MeadWestvaco plans large development in S.C.

MeadWestvaco Corp. is planning to develop 78,600 acres of company-owned forest land in South Carolina as a planned community.
The Henrico County-based paper and packaging company announced the proposed master plans for the property last week. The land is along the eastern edge of the Edisto River in Charleston and Dorchester counties.
“It is right in the growth path of Charleston, and so rather than just selling it, we wanted to work with developers and local officials to come up with a long-term sustainable development plan,” said Alison von Puschendorf, a MeadWestvaco spokeswoman.
Officials said the development could take 40-50 years to implement. The company wants the development to maintain the region’s rural character while being environmentally responsible and creating sustainable towns and villages and education and employment opportunities.
The company has set up a Web site about the development at www.eastedisto.com.
