FLORENCE — Thirty-three South Carolina residents are participating in the seventh class of the Non-Profit Leadership Institute at Francis Marion University. The 33 participants are from 13 cities and represent 33 different organizations.
Among the Pee Dee participants are, from Darlington, Patricia Shepard of Caring Hearts of the Pee Dee; from Florence, G. Kathy Andrews, Francis Marion University, Michelle Bailey of Health Facilities Federal Credit Union, Veyounder R. Brown of Lighthouse Ministries, Aubrey B. Carroll of Friends of the Florence County Library, Joyce G. Ford of The Naomi Project Inc., Cecily Lilly of Junior League of Florence, Margaret Love of Florence Habitat for Humanity, Mulamba Lunda of HopeHealth and Anita L. Throwe of The CARE House of the Pee Dee; from Kingstree, Clara Faye Dozier of the Williamsburg County Disabilities & Special Needs Board; and from Marion, Charles M. Wiegert of the Historic Marion Revitalization Association.
Funded initially with multi-year grants from the Drs. Bruce and Lee Foundation, the institute now receives major support from FMU, along with a grant from the PSARAS Foundation.
The opening session of the seven-month training program began Friday. Additional sessions are scheduled for Oct. 16-17, Nov. 20-21, Jan. 8-9, Feb. 20, March 6, March 20 and April 23-24.
Topics include leadership; program development and delivery; human resource development; engaging board members and volunteers; effective financial resource development and management; programmatic and organizational issues related to data collection and reporting; visibility, including managing external relations; and case studies.
Fred Sheheen, former commissioner and executive director of the S.C. Commission on Higher Education, is director of the FMU institute. He is a senior fellow at the Institute for Public Service and Policy Research at the University of South Carolina.
